Natural management of cattle

There are two methods to achieve pregnancy in cows, the natural mating or the artificial insemination.

Mating Period

Cows are in estrus every 21 days. The heat lasts from 6 to 30 hours and the most fertile part of heat is the second half of the cycle. Males will serve to females, only during the time, the heat is present, for a period of 2 to 4 days.

Destete / Levante

At 8 months the calves are weaned when they are sufficiently well developed digestive system and are able to feed exclusively on grasses.

The initial weight of those weaned is from 60 to 80 kilos and kept for a year on pasture, hopefully, rotational, making 300 kilos at the end of the stage. Hill land is ideal, since weaning developed good bone structure and muscles, to bear the weight achieved in the fattening.

Natural Breeding Service

It should put a bull for every 25 heifers. The bull will detect the heat of the herd and begins its natural breeding service. The mating is planned taking into account the season in which the cows calve, they will never choose the rainy season for to calve cows.

Mating takes between 3 and 5 months. Once the herd is pregnant, it takes 9 months and through gestation and calves will be born, for statistics will be half male and half female.

In the next 7 or 8 months the calf will remain with the mother breast-feeding, no substitute feed is given during this period.

  • Last stage from the animal will have 300 kilos until it passes 450 kilos.
  • The site should be flat to avoid straining the animal and that does not lose weight.
  • lt can be done with good pasture or fattening centers.
  • Can occur with free-range, in rotation or stables.
  • We handle our cattle in grazing and rotation, each bull has a 1 hectare (10,000 square feet) for free grazing.

Artificial Insemination

Basically consists in the introduction of semen from a genetically qualified bull which has been collected semen by different methods. This semen preserved remains frozen until the time of its use.
